Angry Some food for thought if you allow a son or daughter to play on your account...

This is a miltipronged issue but I chose this area to post in becasue it was the Guild part that really chaffed me.

Well, I'm sure most of you would have realized this and prevented it from the beginning. I've only been playing GW for about a month now. My son has been begging me to let him play, so I finally gave in and let him make a character and play (yes using my account). I was very clear when I told him HANDS OFF MY STORAGE! He is on the young side for this game so I was clear when I told him NOT to sit around in towns and chat with folks. I even told him not to worry with joining any guilds. He's in it for the PvE at the moment and not PvP. I did tell him he could invite friends into his (my) friends list. Let's face it, this game goes smoother if you adventure with people you know and can trust (playing style wise anyways)... And so it began...

Last night I had a 24 hour post so he had free run of my computer for several hours while I was away (my wife really has no clue about GW). In that time he managed to disband my current guild and join another. You see I had started a guild, owned it, had a really cool cape, and even had some members. The members consisted of several of my friends and a few others trying to work our way up with several people looking to join 'cause they liked our motivation and helpfulness.

Moral of my story... Make you kids save their allowance and buy their own copy of the game. It isn't worth it.

UPDATE (01 Dec, 05)
My son and I have had no more problems. In fact, I have even started letting him play my Monk (Cadderly the Chosen). He does well though I do make him inform the groups that ask for me by name that he is my son. They usually coudn't care less. So everything is fine after the first initial Snafu. Thanks and enjoy the comments in this thread. Some of them are pretty funny.

i just RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GOn went off at him when i went to his house. he dyed his ASCALON armor all black too, he filled MY characters with his junk, he spent allllll my faction points on elemental spells (he was a warrior/necro) thinking he could use em.
dont let anyone but urself play on ur own account especially kids under 14. they just dont listen.

LOL so true. Well, I grilled him pretty good. Laid out the law again and let him know that the next time he doesn't listen he doesn't play again. Ok so then the little turd says, "Well Dad I'll could just go buy my own computer and game and play my own account then if you don't want me on yours." Sad thing is he has more money in his bank account than I do in mine. HE COULD IF HE WANTED TO! But not without some help from old Dad (cause he's only 10 and can't actually "go get it himself") So I made him focus on the issue not the little smart mouthed albeit someone true reality. JUST FOLLOW MY RULES! Dad can still ground you!

when i told my cousin what he had done he tried to act all innocent...but that wasnt gonna fool his cousin, i knew him too well. i told him that i deleted his character and he will never be able to play this great game without me sitting next to him. he started whinging telling me that i didnt tell him wat faction was and didnt help him enough to know how to play the game, but i had told him abit too much about how to play this game thats how he knew how to use the storage to transfer his stuff on my character. he told me to list all the advice i had given him so i did. it was a whole a4 size page, he then swore at me then walked away. the next day he comes over to my place, says sorry, begged me to let him play but i said no i let him play on my WoW account though ( that game just sux).

lol. Never share accounts unless you are sure they will listen. If you are going to share share from beginning, not from the middle so it can't get THAT screwed up.

I use to share my friends beta account; acually more like 3 of us on the same account at the same time... till they patched that, then it kicked whomever whenever someone new logged in.

Im glade all my cousins are girls, under the age of 12 and 300mi's away.

Whatever you do: ensure the person you share an account with has had full instruction on how to play the game before you allow them to go on. I let a person go on once. One day later, I was 15k down and had a lack of materials. I had to take the dyes and valuable weapons they had hoarded. One password change later, I'm thinking of selling this person's items and deleting their character.

Shall I or shall I not?

ok, for the record, not all kids are that way.

I mean, sure we've all had our spats, but I've never done anything so stupid as to go against Dad's rules of the account. The only time I touch the storage is to get domething from one account to another, get crafting materials for armor, and break into the dye once and awhile. I also occasionally get some weapons from it if it needs to go to my mesmer or my warrior. *note that I have 3 chars over the accounts we have* and I also know for a fact he doesnt want me joining any guilds (like I would anyway ) because we hate the capes.

the point is, if he does something you specifically tell him NOT to, smack him. Thats what I always got, and it worked fine for me. (and it isnt considered child abuse, unless you do it regularly and there are bruises.)

Truly the idea of ecto bombs is absolutely hilarious. That kid must have thought they were the equivalent of nukes for the cost they did. I wonder how he responded when he couldn't throw them at the mobs.

Sorry to hear. But when it comes down to your own account, I would suggest not giving away any kind of private info (email, pw). Sometimes, my school friends would ask me if they can borrow my account, I would always so no, no matter how close they were. It's not because I don't trust them...it's because accidents happen ^^

Hope you can recover soon!

A few months ago we invited an ele into our guild, she said she was 38 or something, so at first we didn't know what to think of it, but we thought any change of pace might be good in a game where most people are 15-20 year old guys. Anyway, a few days later someone pm's me, asking if I can make them officer. At first confused who it is, I check my guild list, and it's the ele's account, but another character. So I try to explain how something like that is a big responsibility, so people will have to prove themselves first, bladybla, anyway i get some sort of badly typed message about not understanding me. Turns out it's her 11 year old son who's playing another account. That wasn't part of the deal...

We kept them around, but most of the time it was that kid logging in, asking annoying questions. You have to understand, this is, in my mind, without a doubt, the absolute worst GW player I ever met. It's a necro/ranger, with no skills in the skillbar, because he thought they were weak anyway, (probably due to not using attribute points) and using an axe as main attack. Not to mention never changing armor.

Well needless to say we weren't happy about it, I mean, sure we fool around and make jokes, like telling him to go to ascalon one, and asking around for Butte Sechs, who supposedly can teach your character how to unlock the swim and jump skill, and go to the desert. It's kinda harmless fun, but eventually we had to kick him. If people join guilds, they have to say wether or not they share an account. Just so there's no surprises.

Ok I got this sort of "attack" or comment if you will in game when I was showing my son how to play... so let me explain to you in the forums The same way I did in the game.

My response is this...

1. My son makes straight A's in school
2. Spends no less than 1 hour a day studying (home work or not)
3. Goes to Karate 2 times a week.
4. Spends Saturdays in Young Marines (boot camp at present)
5. PLays baseball when in season and foot ball when it's in season.

So, as long as he maintains those activities.. I can't Justifiably deny him video games if I myself enjoy playing them. In truth it's just one more way for us to connect and spend some time together. But I do realize there are those children that are allowed to veg in front of some sort of screen all day everyday. That's not right. I concede that point. However, that's not the case in my house.
